Hill
Top Equestrian
Center is the vision of our founding Board
Members, Jim and Lisa Hazelwood. Jim and Lisa have
long envisioned a camp which encourages despondent
youth with a message of Hope, Heart, and Happiness.
Over time, Jim and Lisa recognized the unique venue
of equestrian care and the ability to utilize horses
in communicating this message.
Several
unsuccessful attempts were made to secure property
for a youth camp, but in 2005, a 255 acre living
trust was provided to the Hazelwood’s. This
property on the outskirts of West Alexandria, OH
is a perfect venue for youth activities as it provides
a rural setting with a mix of pasture, woods, creek,
farmland, and rolling hills. With the acquisition
of the property, a submission was made for a 501(c)(3)
non-profit organization, and in June 2006, Hill
Top Equestrian Center was established.
In
the spring of 2007, private funds were donated to
begin initial development of the property. Over
40 volunteers worked to build a road, bridge, picnic
shelter, bunk houses, trails, forts, and a small
outdoor amphitheater. This resulted in HTEC’s
first youth focused activity; paintball camps. These
camps are provided free of charge to boys ages 10
to 17 for an overnight outing in the woods. Campers
are provided an opportunity to experience team building
activities that focus on the theme of Hope, Heart,
and Happiness through paintball activities, fellowship,
food, and fun. Each camp can accommodate up to 40
campers and are held regularly through the summer.
